Questions & Answers

Here you find answers to common questions we receive.
The list will be updated - send us an email on rtta@askerseil.no if you miss anything.

The race organization has hosted three webinars on important topics. They can be watched here:

1. Maritime Safety & Rescue Services Along the Norwegian Coast

2. A Speed Date With the Norwegian Coastline

3. Understanding Wheather at Sea – From Clouds to Forecasts

Q1 - Safety

Do we need a valid certificate for “Personal Offshore Training” according to the Offshore Special Regulations?

Yes. According to Offshore Special Regulations Category 3, a valid certificate is required, either from a full course or a refresher course. The certificate must be valid (check date of expiry) at the time of the race.

At least 50% of the crew on board at any time must hold a valid certificate.

Q3 - Safety

What is Appendix L – Keel & Rudder Inspection Form, and who must carry out the inspection?

Appendix L is part of the Offshore Special Regulations and provides guidance for proper keel and rudder inspection, as required for Category 3 races.

The inspection must be carried out within 24 months prior to the start of the race.

For this race (Category 3), the inspection may be carried out by the boat owner or another suitably qualified person designated by the owner.

The form must be fully completed, signed, and uploaded within the specified deadline on Manage2Sail.

Q5 – Safety

What is the deadline for safety documentation, and where should it be uploaded?

Deadline: 16 June 2026 at 24:00.

The following documents must be uploaded:

  • Training certificates

  • Safety Checklist

  • Appendix L form

All documents must be uploaded in Manage2Sail, where the boat is registered (Edit → Files).

Q7 – Berthing

What is the cost of berthing?

Boats arriving in Mandal before Saturday 20 June must pay a harbour fee using the payment system in the harbor.

From Saturday 20th we have reserved for the race participants. From Saturday 20th to Tuesday 23 you pay a discounted rate to the race organization (details to be provided).

From Tuesday 23rd to 7th July the harbor fee in our harbors is included in the race fee.

Q9 – Navigation limits

Will the organizer provide the 24 NM boundary in electronic format?

A GPX file containing the official 24 NM race boundary will be uploaded to Manage2Sail. The file will reflect the official boundary as defined in the Sailing Instructions.

Sailors may use this file to import the boundary into chartplotters, navigation software, and weather routing tools.

Q2 - Safety

Where do I find all safety requirements?

All safety requirements are listed in World Sailings Offshore Special Regulations (OSR) The most relevant equipment requirements are summarized in a Safety Checklist available on Manage2Sail.

This checklist must be completed and signed by the skipper as part of the boat inspection process.

Q4 – Safety

What happens if the skipper does not upload the Safety Checklist or other required documentation within the deadline?

All boats must be cleared for start before the race begins.

Missing safety documentation may be resolved on site in Mandal prior to the start, subject to available capacity. The Organizing Authority cannot guarantee that this will be possible.

A boat that is not cleared for start will be scored DNS

Q6 – Berthing in Mandal

If we arrive in Mandal before the official opening of the race harbor, can we expect a berth?

Yes. From the weekend prior to the race, Mandal Seilforening will arrange berthing for all participating boats.

A berthing plan will be published on Manage2Sail. All participants must follow the allocated plan and instructions from harbour personnel.

Please note that some harbours along the race route operate at full capacity. Berthing plans are designed to ensure space for all participants—compliance is mandatory.

Q8 – Navigation limits

How is the 24nm limit defined?

The race area is defined as the area inside the outer limit of the contiguous zone 24 nautical miles from the baseline.

A set of GPS-positions will be made available for the sailors and the sailing instructions will include further information on how to interpret this limitation.

Q10 – Crew registration

How can I register all crew members if Manage2Sail only allows me to add two sailors?

Crew changes must be registered before the start of the leg in which the change takes place. Competitors will use the Manage2Sail Sailor App to register crew changes.

For safety reasons, the Organizing Authority must have an accurate record of all crew members on board for each leg in case of an emergency. Therefore, it is not possible to register all potential crew members at the time of initial entry.
